How to Breathe in Zen Meditation – Beginner`s Guide to Zazen

Welcome to a compact beginner`s guide to Zen meditation, addressing how to breathe in zazen.

How you sit in Zazen depends entirely on your body’s level of strength and flexibility. Do not force yourself into a posture that looks sophisticated on someone else, but causes pain and possible injuries. When sitting consistently every day, little by little you will feel more comfortable to sit for longer periods of time and you will be able to laser focus your attention inward, which is the whole purpose of achieving a comfortable and steady posture. However you sit, it is most important that the back is straight, which is achieved by maintaining the natural curve in the spine. For that, tilt the pelvis forward just a bit, lift the sternum and tuck in the chin slightly.

Remember, it is not about how much time is spent in Zazen, but how long you are able to maintain a state of single-mindedness. So rather than sitting for 45 minutes and getting lost in thoughts or daydreaming half of the time, sit for 15 minutes with a strong determination to put all effort into your method of concentration. And do this consistently every day.

Zazen is the quickest way to sharpen concentration, achieve unification and tranquility of mind, spiritual emancipation and eventually, if one’s aspiration is pure and strong enough, come to self-realization or enlightenment.

Have fun with all of this. I’ve got your back! 🧘‍♂️🧘‍♀️
