Super Bowl 55 features one of the most-anticipated quarterback matchups on the biggest stage.  

Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes is going to be fun. Is this the passing of the torch?  

Don’t tell Tom Brady that. Brady led Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl appearance in his first season since arriving from New England. The six-time champion is making his 10th Super Bowl appearance.  

To get No. 7, the Buccaneers will have to beat the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Mahomes has a chance to lead back-to-back Super Bowl runs for the first time since Brady did it in 2003-04.

Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes 

Brady is the all-time NFL leader with 581 TD passes. He ranks second in career passing yards (79,204). He also has a 97.3 career passer rating, which ranks seventh all time.   

Mahomes has been the starter for Kansas City the last three seasons. He’s totaled 14,152 passing yards, 114 TDs and 24 interceptions. Mahomes has the highest all-time passer rating in NFL history at 108.7.  

Brady and Mahomes have combined to win four Associated Press NFL MVP awards. Brady won the award in 2007, 2010 and 2017. Mahomes won the award in 2018.  

Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes in 2020   

Brady led Tampa Bay to an 11-5 record in the regular season. He finished with 4,633 passing yards, 40 TDs and 12 interceptions. Brady led the Bucs to the Super Bowl with three straight playoff wins. He had seven TDs and three interceptions in those matchups against Washington, New Orleans and Green Bay.  

Mahomes was 14-1 as a starter in the regular season for Kansas City. He finished with 4,740 passing yards, 38 TDs and six interceptions. Mahomes suffered a concussion in the AFC divisional playoff round against the Browns, but he returned to lead the Chiefs past the Bills in the AFC championship game.

Tom Brady is in his 21st season in the NFL. He made his NFL debut on Nov. 23, 2000, taking over for starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe in a blowout Thanksgiving loss by the Patriots to the Lions.

How many seasons has Patrick Mahomes played in the NFL?   

Patrick Mahomes is in his fourth season in the NFL. He made his debut with his first start on Dec. 31, 2017, in Week 17 start against Denver. The Chiefs won 27-24.    

Tom Brady vs. Kansas City    

— Brady has made 12 career starts against Kansas City. Brady has a 5-5 record in the regular season and a 2-2 record in the playoffs against the Chiefs.  

— Brady is 3-5 against Reid since he took over with the Chiefs. That includes a 1-5 record in the regular season but a 2-0 record in the playoffs.  

— In the two playoff games, Brady averaged 325 passing yards with three TDs and two interceptions.  

Patrick Mahomes vs. Tampa Bay  

— Mahomes is 1-0 against the Buccaneers, and that victory came in a 27-24 victory in Week 11 of this season. Mahomes passed for 462 yards, three TDs and no interceptions in the victory.  

Tom Brady vs. Pat Mahomes head-to-head matchups     

Brady and Mahomes have split four head-to-head matchups. In those four games, Mahomes is 102 of 159 (64.1 percent). He averages 348 passing yards per game with 11 TDs and three interceptions. Brady is 100 of 158 (63.3 percent). He averages 300.5 passing yards per game with six TDs and five interceptions.

New England 43, Kansas City 40 (Nov. 4 ,2018)    

The Patriots won a 43-40 shootout in the first matchup between the two quarterbacks. Brady passed for 340 yards and a TD. Mahomes finished with 352 yards, four TDs and two interceptions – and the Chiefs tied the game late on a 75-yard TD pass to Tyreek Hill. Brady, however, set up the game-winning field goal with a last-minute drive.  

New England 37, Kansas City 31 (Jan. 20, 2019)  

The 2018 AFC championship was a thriller at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes finished with 295 yards and three TDs, and the Chiefs tied the game at the end of regulation. The Patriots won the toss in overtime, however, and Brady led the game-winning drive that ended with Rex Burkhead’s two-yard TD run.  

Kansas City 23, New England 16 (Dec. 8, 2019)  

Mahomes scored his first head-to-head victory in a regular-season matchup at Gillette Stadium. Mahomes finished with 283 yards, a TD and an interception. Brady had 169 yards, a TD and an interception in the loss.  

Kansas City 27, Tampa Bay 24 (Nov. 29, 2020)  

The Chiefs bolted out to a 27-10 lead and held on for the victory. Mahomes passed for 462 yards, three TDs and no interceptions. Brady threw a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to Mike Evans in a comeback attempt. He finished with 345 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.  

Tom Brady vs. Pat Mahomes playoff history     

Brady has more postseason victories than any other quarterback in NFL history. Brady is 33-11 in playoff games, and he averages 278.4 passing yards with a total of 80 TDs and 38 interceptions in those games. He’s a four-time Super Bowl MVP looking for an unprecedented seventh Super Bowl championship.  

Mahomes is 6-1 in postseason starts and has won five in a row since the AFC championship loss to the Patriots. He averages 293.4 passing yards with 17 TDs and two interceptions in those games. Mahomes was last year’s Super Bowl MVP.
