“In the home, people like to watch TV, but apartments get smaller and also experiences change. So, we want our displays to just be naturally a part of our lives and not a kind of eyesore sitting around somewhere in the flat. So modular displays like this are definitely something that people are going to want in their homes.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Scott, technology expert:
“Displays are always getting bigger and more pixels and more resolution. But we are seeing some interesting evolutions with wireless receivers and the ability to have data in a meaningful way without all the cables, which is a nice touch.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Scott, technology expert:
“Foldable is maturing. It’s finally at a place where it’s not going to break and regular people can own it. And not just, you know, YouTube influencers. So we’re going to be seeing it in interesting ways evolve into the home. So side displays or just, you know, maybe extra monitors.”

The future of display technology is modular.
Electronics brand LG is showing off a modular device that interchanges between TV and music player, while Samsung Display is showing a prototype tablet that both folds and slides.
STORYLINE:
This modular device by LG Display transforms between music player and a more conventional television.
Unveiled at CES gadget show in Las Vegas, the 42-inch UHD screen is fitted with two large speakers that can change configurations depending on the viewer’s preference.
“We want our displays to just be naturally a part of our lives and not a kind of eyesore sitting around somewhere in the flat,” says technology expert Nicole Scott.
“So, modular displays like this are definitely something that people are going to want in their homes.”
LG Display is also showing this interchangeable 27-inch OLED glow device, which moves on a retractable stand and has a touch display like a tablet.
“Displays are always getting bigger and more pixels and more resolution. But we are seeing some interesting evolutions with wireless receivers and the ability to have data in a meaningful way without all the cables, which is a nice touch,” says Scott.
Samsung Display is showcasing this tablet that both folds and slides.
The “Flex Hybrid” prototype combines both foldable and slidable capabilities into one display and large-screen slidables.
Foldable technology is applied to the left side of the screen with slidable technology on the right.
Users can enjoy movies and videos on the 10.5-inch display in 4:3 aspect ratio or on the larger 12.4-inch screen in 16:10 screen ratio.
For now, it’s a prototype, but it gives a clue to how tablets might look in the coming years.
“Foldable is maturing. It’s finally at a place where it’s not going to break and regular people can own it. And not just, you know, YouTube influencers,” says Scott.
