Even with all of the talent that Croatia and England have stocked in their respective national teams, their appearance in the World Cup semifinal is nothing short of astounding.
Croatia is showing the world that their 1998 golden generation — a side that also went to the World Cup semifinal — was not an aberration and that the country can produce top-level soccer talent to compete with the world’s best.
England has shown that fielding a team young enough to forget the mistakes of the past can be incredibly useful in building confidence — especially when that team is led by a former player from those years of mediocrity. It also doesn’t hurt to have a famous rallying cry from the supporters section.
But each team has more than just historical precedent to play for. Since Croatia and England were on the “easier” side of the bracket, they will need to use this semifinal match to prove that whoever progresses did not just make the final through a cake walk. With the French awaiting them in the final, and surely watching the match, the teams will want to put on a show.
